Best Time of Year for Roof Installation in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Late spring through early fall gives the best conditions. You can still install in winter, but it takes more care.

The short answer

Book roof installation from late spring to early fall for the smoothest job. Warm days help shingles seal, and the weather stays more stable. Spring and fall also offer open crew dates.

Why temperature matters

Asphalt shingles seal with a heat-activated strip. That strip needs roughly 45 to 50°F to bond. In cold weather, it may not seal until spring warmth arrives. Until then, wind can lift shingles.

Very hot days cause the opposite problem. Shingles soften and scuff when crews walk on them. Crews often start early on hot days.

Can you install a roof in winter?

Yes, with limits. Crews can install in cold weather when the roof is dry and safe. They hand-seal shingle tabs with roofing cement where the strip will not bond. Metal roofing handles cold better, because it does not rely on a heat-activated strip.

Snow and ice slow work and raise safety risk. Roofers may delay jobs until the roof is clear. For urgent leaks, a temporary fix and a spring install can be a smart plan.

Scheduling tips for Grand Rapids

  • Call early. Good crews book weeks out in spring and fall.
  • Order special materials, such as slate or custom metal, well ahead.
  • Ask about a weather plan. Tarps and dry-in layers protect your home.
  • Confirm the permit before your start date. See our code and permit guide.
  • After big storms, expect long waits as many owners call at once.

Permits and supply timing

Permits take time. Materials also take time, and special orders take longer. Start the process four to six weeks before your target date for standard shingles. Start earlier for slate, cedar, or custom metal. Call early in spring and fall, when schedules fill fast.

Plan for weather delays

Ask every roofer how they handle rain mid-job. A good crew tarps open areas and dries in the roof each day. Ask who pays for any temporary tarping. Get the answer in writing.

Fall: a strong choice

Many owners want a new roof before winter. Fall works well if you book early. A new roof in place before the first snow also avoids ice dam trouble on a weak old roof. Read our ice dam guide to see why.

How long will the job take?

Most homes take one to three days. See the full timeline on our process page. Weather can add days.
